For a long time, I have felt the finitude of our existence. Even as a child, I was always aware of how limited our time is. As I got older, I grew more curious about certain complexities that exist in life. This led me to pursue philosophy during undergrad. During my time at university, a saying I began to incorporate into my life was, “Life is short and time flies by.”
But the true meaning of that philosophy did not come full circle until the pandemic hit. When our reality dramatically changed to people falling ill and passing away all over the world, it made me realize how precious life is. It made me realize how easily we forget to cherish the positive and happy moments, whether it is spending time with our loved ones or trusted friends.
As humans, we possess a wide range of raw emotions. Since we are constantly managing these emotions, we fixate on the painful moments, because those are the ones that scar our hearts and minds. So, where does that leave us?
Where Is The Love?
I believe that one of the most defining problems confronting humanity is our inability to appreciate the happy moments. We often become overwhelmed by inner conflicts, challenges at work, and familial responsibilities which prevent us from staying present in the moment and liberating ourselves from judgment, regret, and stress.
So, when a parent takes their kids to the movies or an amusement park, they should not think of it as an obligation or a chore, but a privilege to get to see their kids smile. “Present in the moment” means when you are making love with someone, you are not thinking about how and when you’re going to tell your friends after, but losing yourself in that intimate spell when nothing else in the world exists except for you two.
We cannot take anything for granted. Not anymore.
I encourage everyone to take advantage of the precious time we have because time is undefeated. The moment you identify that you may be in an internal conflict with pursuing two lives, life becomes clearer. The noise between the life you think you should pursue and the life you want to pursue dissipates. Since our existence is limited and we do not know what the future has in store for us, we might as well utilize our time doing what we want.
So, if you have a dream, protect it, and work towards it, and do not concern yourself with the time it will take to achieve it. Time will pass no matter what. The moment this happens everything in life will fall into place. The way you carry yourself will naturally influence your personality, work ethic, passion, confidence, and ability to cultivate new relationships.
We are all equally bound by time, so cherish each second in your life that makes you happy.
Every day that we live on this earth is a gift. That is why they call it the present.
